About Kay

Born and raised in Hertfordshire, Kay Stratford studied Design and Ceramics for four years in Cornwall. She then undertook a stonemasonry apprenticeship in Kent and on completing this Kay was invited to work at Canterbury Cathedral. In all Kay worked as a stonemason for ten years

Whilst working as a stonemason Kay continued to explore the fields of ceramics and sculpture. It was during this time that she began to develop and refine her techniques in the production of ceramic vessels – focusing particularly on the creation of ceramics using the coiling technique.

Building with clay coils is a one of the most ancient and universal of ceramic techniques, yet it is a method that can demand a great deal of precision, skill and patience. Kay was drawn to this particular style as it enables her to precisely control the formation of her work. In doing so Kay is able to produce individual pieces that are both asymmetrical and elegantly sculptural.

Drawing inspiration from her love of the natural world, Kay is working on a series of ceramic vessels that have been inspired by the countryside around her home; from the flowing lines of the ploughed fields to the colours and textures of tree bark and lichens – elements of which are clearly reflected in Kay’s current work.

The unique pieces produced by this contemporary ceramicist have simple forms yet convey a sense of powerful organic growth. A variety of textures and range of colours are used to further enhance the individuality of the pieces.
